Day 12 (4/6/21): Steamboat Springs

Today, we woke up expecting snow, only to find none. It was chilly, probably around 28degrees. We had a leasurely morning getting ready, making breakfast, and using the wifi at the KOA to do some trip planning. Then did important things like dump garbage and get water.

Around 10am, it started hailing. It didn't last long though. So we headed out to Steamboat Springs ski resort. My mom decided to sit today out because of the weather forecast. It had been in the 50's the days prior and was cold (28) today with a chance of snow. So she hung out at the camper while I headed up to the lifts.

As I headed up, it started to snow! This whole time, I thought that weather forecast was a joke. I figured that it would be dust on crust from the freeze of the previous days warm temps; if I got three runs in, that would be fine. I just wanted to check out the area.

My first run was bad. It was dust on crust. Light powder on top of sheer blue ice. My second run was better. The snow was picking up so there was a little powder to go through. My third run was better. The clouds were coming in thicker so visibility was getting worse.

But the powder was getting better! So I kept going. My three runs turned into riding every lift at least once, 13 runs, and 4 hours later - I called it a day.

I had met a nice man skiing and we ended up doing our last runs together. The last few were the best of the day! We got fresh tracks at 2pm as the sun was coming out. I couldn't believe it! Then, we did an apre ski afterwards and my mom met us. It was a beautiful day by the end with partially blue skies.

Afterwards, we headed back to the camper. I was absolutely wiped. I was not expecting a powder day or to snowboard as much as I did. So I took a short 30min nap before we hit the road to find a place to stay for the night.

We did some errands and got gas, then headed out. I had found some places to park for the night on an app called ioverlander. It marks places such as dump sites, camp sites, parking sites, water, etc. So we found a snow mobile park on National Forest Land just outside of Steamboat Springs for the night.
